Do you know that, before the standardization of U.S.
currency, banks used to mint their own money? Do
you know that one bank in particular printed a
three-dollar bill with a picture of Santa Claus on
it? Tim Parrott, captain of the JV Academic Team,
knows that. And with that knowledge, Tim, captain
of the JV Academic Team, led the JV Defenders to a
thrilling overtime victory over the Tates Creek
Commodores on Tuesday.
The JV Academic Team of Parrott, Laura Edwins, Tim
Mills, Cyrus Saffari, Clair Schaub, and Ian Stanley
jumped out to an early lead, but during the second
half the Commodores went on a run and with only five
seconds left in regulation held a one point lead.
Then Tim answered a question (Q: During the Middle
Ages, to whom did a vassal swear loyalty? Ans: his
Lord) to tie the score just as the buzzer sounded.
In the overtime, Tates Creek went on a run to take a
three-point lead, but the Defenders rallied to tie
the score. Then came Parrott’s resounding and
unequivocal answer to the arcane question that
possibly only five other people on the planet know
the answer to (see Santa Claus above).
In the varsity match the Defenders upped their
season record to 3 and 2 with a 20 to 18 victory
over Tates Creek. The Defender varsity of Andy
Bessin, Mathew Damrell, Zach Davis, and Lizzie Engel
endured a tense match against the Tates Creek
varsity, managing to hold off the charging
Commodores in the last two minutes of play. After
the match the Varsity team all agreed that their win
over Tates Creek was a true team victory.
Asked about the tense JV overtime match, JV coach
Carlos Verdecchia remarked, “Many times have I seen
a parrot sitting on the shoulder of a man, but until
now I had never seen a team on the shoulders of a
Parrott.”
